A Bittersweet Ending!

It is starting to actually feel like summer! I hope everyone is enjoying their first few days of summer break. Last week was full of fun! The misty weather at the zoo didn't stop anyone from enjoying the animals.

On Friday, we had tasty treats at DQ and ended our time together at the park with kickball and other activities.

The last day is always bittersweet. We are all excited for summer, but it is also hard to say goodbye. :( I had an awesome time teaching, learning from, and laughing with all of you. Thank you for all of your hard work this year and good luck in 2nd grade! My classroom will be across from 2nd grade rooms next year, so make sure you stop by and say hi! :)

Masks and Poems

Today for art, we talked about different ways people around the world make and use masks. I gave the students an animal poem. Their job was to make a mask of that animal, and then each group read their poem to the class. Take a look at their great work!

AR Party!

I am SUPER excited to announce that our whole class made the AR goal for March and April. We celebrated today with a lunch/movie party. Mr. Adams even stopped by to congratulate them!

You may be asking, "What is AR?" AR stands for accelerated reader. When students finish reading a story, they can go online and take a comprehension test on it. Most of the books the kids are reading are a half of a point if they get the questions all right. Longer books can be worth more. I gave the kids a goal of 5 points for 2 months. The first time around, eleven kids made it. This time around, all 22 kids made it! WOW! There were even three students with over 30 AR points for March and April. Way to go Logan, Gavin, and Carter! I am so impressed and proud of all of you!

Fractions!

We began learning about fractions yesterday. A fraction is a part of a whole. Today, we designed gumball machines. I had the kids use fractions to show how many and what color gumballs they had in their gumball machines. Take a look!

That 'R' is BOSSY!

We have been learning all about the BOSSY 'R' for the past two weeks. Today the kids put a 'bossy r' word on their foreheads. I gave them a class list, and they had to walk around and write the 'bossy r' word next to the right name.

ar  /ar/
or /or/
er, ir, ur, all say /er/

AR Party!

We had 11 students meet the AR goal of 5 points for January and February! Today, they celebrated with a lunch/movie party! We will do the same thing for March and April. Students who get at least 5 AR points by May 1st  will participate in the next AR party! Let me know if you would like instructions on how to take the tests at home!
