The students earned their 25th class ticket yesterday. Today, we celebrated with root beer floats and a movie! Way to go 1st grade!!! Our next goal is 25 tickets for an extra half hour in the computer lab.

Does your child like to invent things? Check this out!
Principals and Superintendents: Please share with interested staff and/or families
Creativity, innovation, problem-solving and the invention process
are the main elements of the MN Student Inventors Congress. Students are
challenged to identify a problem, research it, test solutions, document
results and then display results of this
process. MSIC advisors receive a packet containing the information for
the event and "hot to teach and invention unit."
School teams and or individual students are welcome to join!
Please register at www.mnscsc.org by January 30.
Participants: Grades K-12
Regional event: May 2, Madison East Mall, Mankato
Fee for materials: $25/individual (not with a participating school)
or $75/district (no limit on number of students at the regional event).
An additional $10/student fee is assessed for those wishing to display
inventions at the regional fair (cost includes
t-shirt and awards).
For more information: Contact Melanie Schmidt, MSIC Regional Coordinator at mschmi3@isd77.k12.mn.us

New Addition to our Class!
I asked Santa for a Kindle Fire for the kids, and he delivered! :) The kids have been taking turns reading books and playing educational games during Daily 5 or free time.
Movie and PJ day was a blast. :) These two HAD to get their picture taken, because they wore matching pjs!

Accelerated Reading!
Hello 1st Grade Families!
The kids began taking accelerated reader tests today. They are now able to put a book they would like to take a comprehension test on in a basket. I hope to get at least 4 or 5 tests done per day. The kids earn points when they get at least 70% of the questions correct. I have a chart up in our classroom tracking student points. Kids that earn at least 5 points by the end of February will participate in a lunch in the classroom and movie party!
The kids are able to take tests online, so if they have their username and password they can access the tests at home. If you want your child's information to help them at home, please let me know! There is a link to the AR tests under the kids' websites on this page.
HAPPY READING! :)

Place Value and Number Patterns
We started a new chapter today in math! We will be learning about place value and number patterns. The kids played musical tens today. They worked together to make as many tens as they could before the music stopped!
Then, we talked about tens and ones. The students used pretzel sticks for tens and smarties for ones. I gave them a number, and they showed me the number with a yummy snack. :)
