Interesting Read for parents/teachers on the First Grader's Brain!

Inside the first grader's brain

Sight Words!

Learning sight words is a big part of becoming an excellent reader. I tell the students that these words do not follow our rules. They are NAUGHTY! ;) We just have to look at the word and be able to say it instantly. Make sure you are practicing your weekly sight words at home!

We did an activity called Forehead Sight Words today. Ask your child about it! They had a lot of fun. :)

Nancy Noun and Victor Verb

We have been talking about nouns and verbs this week. A noun is a PERSON, PLACE, or, THING. A verb is an ACTION or something that we do.

The girls labeled "Nancy Noun" with nouns like hair, shirt and feet. The boys labeled "Victor Verb" with verbs like bend, see, and jump.

They did a great job; check them out!

Comprehend = Do I understand?

We have been discussing the beginning, middle, and end of stories this week!

*Who are the characters?
*What is the setting?
*How did the characters change throughout the story?

We read "Are You My Mother" on Monday, and the kids were SUPER excited when they looked out the window and saw "Snort" from the story! :)

Building Reading Stamina!

We have been building reading stamina to prepare us for Daily 5. Our goal is to fill our Time-o-meter to 15 minutes by the time we have introduced every Daily 5 station. It is important that we use our reading time wisely, so we practice staying in one spot and reading the whole time. We are up to 8 minutes of reading without interruptions! We have also started Work on Writing. Next week we will add Word Work and Listening to Reading.

1st Week of School!

Wow! We had a FANTASTIC first week of school. We have been practicing how we walk in line, sit at the circle rug, use our supplies, and so much more! I have the students practice and model each procedure, and then we practice and model a few more times. :) We are getting the hang of things already.

The rules in our classroom are:
1. Take care of yourself.
2. Take care of others.
3. Take care of the environment.
*You can ask your child what these rules mean! :)

We read "How You Filled A Bucket Today" this afternoon. The kids loved the story, and they are excited to fill someone's bucket on Monday!
