Nancy Noun and Victor Verb!

We have been learning about nouns and action verbs. Today the girls labeled Nancy with as many nouns as they could think of, and the boys labeled Victor with lots of verbs! Then, they shared their project with the rest of the class.

Calling All Inventors!

This isn't through our school district, but I thought I would pass on this cool opportunity for kids grade K-12!

Calling Student Inventors!
MN Student Inventors Congress Student Competition

Do you have an idea for a great invention? Creativity, innovation, problem solving and the invention process are the main elements of the Minnesota Student Inventors Congress. Students are challenged to identify a problem, research it, test solutions, document results and then display the results of this process. MSIC advisors receive a packet containing information for the event and "how to teach an invention unit."

Tens and Ones

During math, we have been focusing on place value. The first graders need to be able to tell me, for example, that 23 is 2 tens and 3 ones. We used pretzel sticks and jelly beans to show numbers today! :)

Tuna Drive!

Way to go first grade! We tied with Mrs. Sheeran's class for first place in the canned tuna/chicken drive. Between the two classes, we donated over 40 cans to the Janesville Food Shelf. "Fisherman Erler" visited our classroom and read a fishing book to the class.

Math Leaders

Each school day, we begin math with a number of the day and quick practice. The kids have been watching me teach them the routine, and last week they started doing it themselves. Our new curriculum encourages students to be the leaders allowing them to learn from each other. Each student can use his or her own favorite strategy to solve problems. Take a look! :)

Color Collages!

We have art every Thursday, and we do the ABC's of art. This week our letter was "C", so we made Color Collages! We picked a color and cut out pictures of that color and made a collage. We have awesome artists in first grade!

9-Partners

We have been working hard on number partners during math class. Today, some of the students made a "9 poster" that shows different ways to make 9.

Some kids even thought of equations like 100 - 91 and 103 - 94....WOW! Take a look!

Homework

Hi First Grade Families!
I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend. I added a homework schedule to the side of the home page. Right now, the only homework first graders are responsible for is the math packet each week. We will begin spelling homework in 2 weeks! I will update the homework schedule as we add things.

Thank you for all of your help with the homework!

Caterpillars!

Landon brought in caterpillars to show the class. We have them in a little butterfly house, so that we can watch them go through their life cycle and become butterflies! Take a peek!

1st Week!

Hi First Grade Families!
We had a successful and exciting first week of school! :) We are becoming a team of learners and learning about all of the rules and procedures in our classroom. We have also been practicing our emergency drills and learning about bus safety from the bus drivers.

You should have seen the first Math homework packet in Thursday folders. That is the only homework so far. Spelling homework will start in two weeks.

If you click on the "Look into our Week" tab, you will find our goals for next week and also anything special we are doing for the week.

Please make sure you contact me with any questions, concerns or compliments. I want to work as a team to make your child's 1st grade year a fun and rewarding experience. :)

A Bittersweet Ending!

It is starting to actually feel like summer! I hope everyone is enjoying their first few days of summer break. Last week was full of fun! The misty weather at the zoo didn't stop anyone from enjoying the animals.

On Friday, we had tasty treats at DQ and ended our time together at the park with kickball and other activities.

The last day is always bittersweet. We are all excited for summer, but it is also hard to say goodbye. :( I had an awesome time teaching, learning from, and laughing with all of you. Thank you for all of your hard work this year and good luck in 2nd grade! My classroom will be across from 2nd grade rooms next year, so make sure you stop by and say hi! :)
